5 Tips for Choosing an Awesome Gift

As a gift shop owner, I watch people struggle with choosing a gift all the time... almost every day. Some folks wait for the gift to "jump out at them" or they will " know it when they see it" or the gift fairy (that's me!) steps in and guides them to something that fits the bill. It can be a difficult decision. You want to pick the right thing. You want the recipient to really like what you choose. You want it to be perfect or, at least, not horrible and totally off-base. It's intimidating and a real struggle for some shoppers. This guide is designed to help you choose a great gift every time and make the experience of gift buying pleasant and rewarding, as it should be.

Tip #1 : It's Not About You!

Ok, this is some tough love here. This gift is not about you, your taste, your favorite color, favorite scent, or your Pinterest Board. This gift is about the recipient. Taking yourself out of the equation can be hard. You have to ask, "What will he/she like" rather than default to what you are drawn to based on what you like. It is very hard to pick something that you think is unattractive or weird or not funny or silly or useless. But, if you can take yourself out of the picture and focus solely on your recipient and what you know of their taste, I promise the choices will become more clear. It can help to recall time you have spent together, places they have enjoyed, clothing/jewelry they wear often, things that make them laugh, their social media posts or their life experiences and hobbies.

Tip #2 : How Much To Spend

This is often based on your budget, but there are some loose guidelines to help you determine what is the "right" amount to spend on a gift. Having a spending limit in mind will narrow your choices and help with any decision paralysis you encounter due to the amount of options available.

"Thank You Gift" : $5.00 - $15.00

Birthday Gift : $15.00 - $40.00

Shower Gift : $25.00 - $50.00

Housewarming Gift : $25.00 - $50.00

Hostess Gift : $10.00 - $20.00

Wedding Gift : $50.00 - $100.00+

Teacher/Professional Appreciation Gift : $10.00 - $25.00

Tip #3 : What Not to Buy

These are not hard and fast rules by any means, but there are some things you should avoid if you are really trying to choose a great gift from the heart. Those things are:

Gag Gifts - One laugh and then never thought of again

Gift Cards - Impersonal and lack effort

Flowers - Too easy and they die (sad face)

Offensive Gifts - Tread lightly on things that toe the line between funny and shocking. Refer back to Tip #1 if you are unsure.

Cheap Gifts - Sensitive topic, I know, but don't be super cheap if you are trying to be thoughtful and get someone you care about something they will like. Consider stepping it up a notch and get a gift that will last. The old saying, "they don't make em like they used to" is very true, but some things are still made well if you seek them out.

Tip #4 - Make it Useful

When in doubt after going though the first three tips, choose the most useful gift for your recipient. Will they wear it often? Can they utilize its function regularly? Is it in line with their habits? These questions will help you whittle down your choices to land on the best option.

Tip #5 : Wrap it Beautifully!

The gift wrap is the first impression. It makes a statement and, therefore, it makes a difference. Grab a box, some nice paper, a ribbon or a fun bow... and wrap it up. If you don't know how to wrap, find someone who does or bring it to Gifted Boutique and Wrappery, and we will take care of it for you. Put in the effort and it will make your recipient smile.

Happy gift buying! And... don't forget the card!
